Christmas Island environment and heritage

Geography and climate

The Island is the summit of a submarine mountain. It rises steeply to a central plateau dominated by rainforest. The plateau reaches heights of up to 360 metres and consists mainly of limestone with layers of volcanic rock.

On 19 February 2008, the then Minister for Home Affairs, the Honourable Bob Debus MP, asked the Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories to inquire into and report on the role of the National Capital Authority.
