Workers' Compensation

The Australian Government is transitioning the delivery of workers compensation arrangements for Norfolk Island to the new service provider, Gallagher Bassett. The new arrangements will commence in January 2021.

Norfolk Island governance & administration

In March 2015, the Australian Government announced comprehensive changes for Norfolk Island. The action was taken to address issues of sustainability which arose from the model of governance requiring Norfolk Island to deliver local, state and federal functions from 1979.

Norfolk Island Water Resource Assessment project

Water availability

In 2019, the CSIRO was engaged by the department to assess Norfolk Island's surface and groundwater resources and options to increase water security. The assessment was part of the Norfolk Island Water Resource Assessment (NIWRA) project, with the information helping inform government and community actions to build water resilience, individually and collectively.

The first part of the NIWRA is now completed which includes a full technical report and summary report.

Kingston Pier Channel Construction Project

The Kingston Pier has always been a vital link to Norfolk Island.

The Norfolk Island community has been extensively involved in the design development for the proposed Kingston Pier Channel construction project, providing valuable feedback that has been key to the progression of the chosen design, Design Option 3a.

The project will increase the channel bed's depth and width to improve access and safety and ensure it meets required standards. It will also support greater usage of the pier by commercial charter and fishing vessels and emergency responders.

Next Steps

In October 2019 further consultation about the proposed changes to traffic laws, with a focus on the proposed change to the practice of ‘ute tray riding’, was held in Norfolk Island. The report is available here PDF: 1014 KB
