Transition planning for state services is progressing well, following the recent signing of the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) between the Australian and Queensland governments to support the provision of state services to Norfolk Island.

Under the IGA, the Queensland Government will provide support and oversight for Norfolk Island Health and Residential Aged Care Service (NIHRACS) and operate the Norfolk Island Central School (NICS), when current arrangements with the New South Wales Government cease on 31 December 2021.

This week’s final visit of HMAS Sirius to Norfolk Island before the supply ship is decommissioned is a significant moment for the community, showcasing the rich maritime and military history of the Island.

Norfolk Island is the ceremonial homeport of Sirius in recognition of the historical ties to HMS Sirius, the flagship of the First Fleet.

An amnesty allowing people to surrender unlicensed or unregistered firearms to the Norfolk Island Police Force (NIPF) is currently under way until 30 October 2022, as part of the Australia-wide firearms amnesty.

During the amnesty, people won’t be prosecuted for possessing a firearm for which they don’t hold a permit or licence, or which is unregistered, if they surrender that firearm to the NIPF – no questions asked.

The aim of the firearms amnesty is to improve public safety by reducing the number of unlicensed and unregistered firearms in the community.
