Change of Public Holiday Date for Hari Raya Puasa 2022 Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Number: A2/2022

Date: 07 April 2022

In July 2021, a gazette was issued, advising observance of the Hari Raya Puasa public holiday on Monday, 2 May 2022 (refer Gazette 02/2021).

The Indian Ocean Territories Administration received a formal request from the senior Imam on Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI) for the observance of Hari Raya Puasa on CKI to be changed to Tuesday, 3 May 2022.

The celebration of Hari Raya Puasa is a significant religious event for the Islamic community on CKI. The method for calculating the date is based on a sighting of the new moon and is difficult to accurately predict in advance.

A new Gazette that proclaims Hari Raya Puasa public holiday to be observed on Tuesday, 3 May 2022 has now been issued. This replaces the public holiday previously gazetted for Monday, 2 May 2022.
