Cities and Suburbs Unit

The Australian Government has established the Cities and Suburbs Unit to deliver on its urban policy agenda.

National Urban Policy

We're developing a new National Urban Policy. The draft National Urban Policy outlines the Australian Government's goals and objectives to enable our urban areas to be more liveable, equitable, productive, sustainable and resilient. The Australian Government is also working with state and territory governments to reinstate a shared vision for sustainable growth in our cities.

Public consultation on the draft policy is now underway until 4 July 2024. You can share your views by completing the short survey on our A National Urban Policy for Australia Have your say page.

For more information see the Minister's media release.

Urban Policy Forum

The Government has appointed urban policy experts to the Urban Policy Forum to provide advice on the Government's urban policy agenda, including supporting a coherent vision for a National Urban Policy. The Forum held its first meeting on 4 August 2023. The Forum's next meeting will be held in the last quarter of 2023. Additional information on the Urban Policy Forum can be found in the Minister's media release.

State of Cities Report

The Australian Government will pull together an accurate and up-to-date picture of life in our cities in State of the Cities reports.

Urban Precincts and Partnerships Program

The urban Precincts and Partnerships Program will support transformative investment in urban Australia based on the principles of unifying urban places, growing economies and serving communities.

The Government announced the regional Precincts and Partnerships Program in October 2022. Together these two programs geographically cover the nation.

The Thriving Suburbs Program will provide merit based and locally-driven grants that address priority community infrastructure in urban and suburban communities.
