Australia’s rail network is continuing to grow, moving passengers and freight across the country, connecting communities, generating jobs and stimulating the economy.
The department is working on a number of high-profile rail projects and initiatives, designed to improve and modernise the passenger and freight rail network. Key priorities include:
- Inland Rail and other key interstate freight rail networks, moving freight across the country including through the construction of a national freight rail network designed to enhance supply chain productivity.
- The development of a network of interconnected multi-user, open access intermodal terminals, that will drive productivity and facilitate the movement of road, rail and sea freight nationally, including through connections with Inland Rail.
- The $11 billion Sydney Metro-WSA(SMWSA) rail project, connecting St Marys to the site of Sydney’s new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) and the new Aerotropolis city centre of Bradfield.
- The development of proposed strategies for the delivery of High Speed Rail, revolutionising interstate travel on the east coast of Australia.
