Australia is leading the way in new safety standards for radio waves and wireless communications, including Wi-Fi and 5G.
Building on decades of research from key national and international scientists, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA)—the authority that provides advice to the Australian Government on radiation protection—has released its new Standard for Limiting Exposure to Radiofrequency Fields—100 kHz to 300 GHz.
The Standard sets the limits for safe exposure to electromagnetic energy (EME) emissions for workers and the general public and is enforced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
The radio waves from technology must comply with the standards, which are well below safety limits set by ARPANSA. This includes exposure to radio waves used in wireless communications, such as 5G, as well as telecommunications equipment like mobile phones and wireless devices like remote controls, smart TVs, Wi-Fi routers and laptops.
