2023 Review of the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy

We are seeking your feedback on how the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy and National Action Plan can be strengthened to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and reliability of Australia’s supply chains.

Why we want your input

Since the strategy’s release in 2019, supply chains have experienced ongoing and compounding disruptions, including the COVID-19 pandemic, extreme weather events and skills shortages. We want to hear from you to understand the freight and supply chain issues you face in this new environment; and how a refreshed strategy and national action plan can provide a foundation to respond to these issues.

Read the 2023 Review discussion paper below and make a submission. Alternatively, you can attend a webinar or consultation workshop that will commence late August.

What will be the outcome of this consultation?

Your submission will help inform the 2023 Review Report which will be used to refresh the strategy and develop a new 5-year national action plan in 2024.

The Issue

Australia’s total domestic freight task is projected to grow by 26% between 2020 and 2050. This comes with unique supply chain challenges to meet the demand.

The National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy is a national framework designed to position Australia to meet its growing freight needs. The current strategy was agreed to by governments with extensive input from industry.

When the strategy was established in 2019, it provided foundations for improving the efficiency, effectiveness and reliability of Australian supply chains. However, over the past few years, supply chains have experienced ongoing and compounding disruptions of the scale never envisaged when the strategy was being developed.

While the foundations of the strategy remain strong, infrastructure and transport ministers agreed to bring forward the first review from 2024 to 2023 to ensure the strategy remains fit for purpose in the current environment.

2023 Review of the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (the department) is collecting information for the purposes of [the 2023 Review of the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy (review)], in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988.

The department will use this information to inform consideration of issues associated with [the Review of the National Freight and Supply Chain consultations] and will store this information securely. It may be used by the department to make further contact with you about the review.

The department will not disclose information to third parties, except in the circumstances outlined below.

Submissions, in part or full, including the name of the author may be published on the department's website unless the submission is confidential. Confidential submissions (including the author's name) will not be published. Private addresses and contact details will not be published or disclosed to any third parties unless required by law.

Submissions will only be treated as confidential if they are expressly stated to be confidential.
