These placemats are based on the initial findings from the population and housing analysis of the ongoing South East Queensland (SEQ) research project. Key findings include:
- The total population of the 12 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of SEQ in 2020 was 3.80 million, an increase from 3.49 million in 2016, reflecting an annual growth rate of 2.1 per cent. The main growth LGAs were Brisbane, Gold Coast and Moreton Bay.
- The projected population of the 12 LGAs in 2041 is 5.44 million, which is an extra 1.65 million residents and a 43.4 per cent increase since 2020.
- These LGAs had 166,000 new residential building approvals between 2016 and 2021. Higher-density development has predominantly occurred in the Brisbane and Gold Coast LGAs.
- SEQ is expected to add 794,000 new dwellings between 2016 and 2041, with 60 per cent added by consolidation, rather than expansion.
