In consideration of future requirements for improved occupant protection for those involved in side impact crashes, a one day workshop was held in Munich in conjunction with the Enhanced Safety Vehicles (ESV) conference during May 1994. A number of key international research socialists as well as members of the project team and the Federal Office of Road Safety, met to disuss current developments in side impact regulation in the USA and in Europe with a view to helping demonstrate which standard would be more suited for adopting in Australia and what the strengths and weaknesses are of both procedures. The meeting was also interested in locating current information about the likely, costs and benefits of both procedures.
