Video Relay Calls now available on the NRS app

Find out how to make calls on the go with Video Relay.

Video Relay calls are now available on the NRS app.

Video Relay over Skype allows Auslan users to sign their side of the conversation, while the relay officer signs the response of the other person back to the user. This NRS call option suits people who want to make a call using Auslan to someone who speaks English and uses an ordinary telephone.

The following call types can be made on the app, which might suit you depending on your communication needs:

  • type and read—NRS Chat
  • speak and read—NRS Captions
  • speak and listen with assistance—Voice Relay
  • sign using Auslan—Video Relay.

What do I need to do?

Step one

  • If you are a Video Relay user who would like to make calls through the app, the first step is to download the NRS app from either the Google Play store (which caters to android phones and tablets), or the Apple App Store (which services Apple iPhones and iPads).
  • Start by searching for NRS or National Relay Service in the search field, then select the app and tap to install.
  • If you already have the app installed on your device, make sure you have the most up to date version downloaded.

Step two

To make a Video Relay call, open the app and select Video Relay (sign using Auslan) from the Select your call type menu. If you already have Skype installed, tap Start Skype at the bottom of the screen.

If you don't already have Skype installed on your device, you'll see a Get the Skype app button on the app. This will take you to the app store where you can download the Skype app to your phone.

You only need to download Skype once. Once you have downloaded Skype to your device, you can go back to the NRS app to make a Video Relay call and tap Start Skype. You will be taken to the Skype app. Tap Send message. This will take you to a chat screen where you can then send a message to start the video relay call.
