Customers now have more time to upgrade devices that will be affected.
Australia’s mobile network providers are switching off their 3G networks to boost the capacity, speed and reliability of their 4G and 5G networks.
Whilst Telstra had originally announced it would be switching its 3G network off on 30 June 2024, this has now been extended to 31 August 2024.
Optus will switch off its 3G network on 1 September 2024. TPG Telecom/Vodafone has already switched off its 3G network.
Australians are encouraged to check if their devices will be impacted by the switch off. Some 4G devices may be unable to make any voice calls once a 3G network is switched off. There is also a subset of 4G devices that may continue to operate for voice calls and data but will not be able to make Triple Zero calls.
Older 4G devices and devices that are purchased overseas are particularly at risk.
Australians are urged not to call Triple Zero to test their phones. It will not provide you with an answer, and may prevent people from accessing life-saving support.

The Australian Government is working with industry via a newly established Working Group to support the planned switch offs in a safer way.
