Road Vehicle Standards legislation transitional period extended by 12 months

The transitional period for the Road Vehicle Standards (RVS) legislation has been extended by 12 months, to 30 June 2023.

The transitional period for the Road Vehicle Standards (RVS) legislation has been extended by 12 months, to 30 June 2023.

The extension supports segments of the industry whose ability to transition to the new regulatory framework has been impacted by COVID-19 and global supply chain issues, giving them the extra time they need to continue to adapt their businesses and make the switch.

The extended transition period will also ensure the uninterrupted supply of a range of road vehicles, allowing impacted businesses to continue managing demands for their vehicles under the outgoing Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 while they finalise their transition to the RVS legislation.

The RVS laws are designed to ensure all road vehicles being provided to the Australian market for the first time meet national road vehicle standards for safety, security and emissions. It is therefore important for businesses to continue to make the transition so that they are ready to start full RVS operations from 1 July 2023.

Any road vehicle providers that have already transitioned to the RVS legislation will be able to continue providing their vehicles using approvals granted to them under the new legislation.

The Australian Government will continue to work with industry to ensure the transition to the new RVS regulatory framework is as smooth as possible, and thanks them for their continued support and feedback.
