Regional Level Crossing Upgrade Fund is now open for applications

State and territory governments are invited to apply for funding for new and upgraded railway crossing safety protections under the Australian Government’s Regional Level Crossing Upgrade Fund (RLCUF).

The Australian Government has committed $40 million annually over four financial years for infrastructure projects under the RLCUF, to improve railway crossing safety in regional areas across the nation.

The RLCUF will help to make regional railway crossings safer by providing investment in railway crossing safety protections, such as:

  • changing from passive to active controls
  • improvements to road surfaces approaching railway crossings (signage, rumble strips, improved line markings, lights, speed cushions, speed reductions etc.), or
  • improvement to the railway crossing surroundings to increase sighting distances.

State and territory governments are encouraged to apply. Collaboration and co-funding from local government councils and private organisations is strongly encouraged.

Jurisdictions will be able to submit first round applications to the department for consideration by 29 September 2023, then again by 27 September 2024 for round 2.
