The Australian Government has announced funding of $10.5 million to establish the Media Diversity Measurement Framework.
The Framework will allow the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to deliver a broad range of research and data activities, including deeper engagement and collaboration with industry, academia and subject-matter experts.
The decision in the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) follows the delivery of a report by the ACMA to the government on how to implement the new Framework.
The government accepted the ACMA's advice—with the Framework establishing a robust, long-term evidence base that will form part of the government's broader News Media Assistance Program (News MAP).
The Media Diversity Measurement Framework builds on earlier ACMA research and has been informed by a public consultation process undertaken earlier in 2023.
The ACMA will now commence work to implement the first stage of the Media Diversity Measurement Framework over the next 12 months. This will include establishing a regular reporting series beginning by the end of next year.
