Australian Government investment ensure ABC broadcasts continue during and after emergencies.
When extreme weather or disaster strikes, radio broadcasting becomes an essential source of information and advice to keep local communities safe.
Now, ABC radio broadcasting sites across the nation have crucial backups in place in an emergency event with the rollout of 5 new Mobile Broadcasting Assets (MBA). These portable, battery powered units are designed to be quickly deployed across long distances to ABC transmission sites, supplying emergency power if regular transmission fails.
The MBAs are being built and rolled out by BAI Communications and are funded under the $20 million Broadcasting Resilience Program, which is delivering resilience and redundancy measures to keep communities connected in event of disaster.
The MBAs will be strategically located around the country at the following sites, based on research of previous natural disasters and ease of access to affected regions:
- Bald Hills, Queensland
- Gungahlin, Australian Capital Territory
- Hamersley, Western Australia
- Mount Bellenden Ker, Queensland
- Reynella, South Australia.
Projects delivered under the Broadcasting Resilience Program are already providing real benefits to communities to boost communications resilience in emergencies.
