The time-saving Tonkin Gap project has officially been complete, and is now benefiting thousands of motorists, cyclists, walkers and the local community.
In December 2023, the notorious bottleneck on Tonkin Highway was alleviated with additional lanes opened and the speed limit reinstated to 100 km/h.
The final section between Hepburn Avenue and Reid Highway has also been reinstated to 100 km/h in both directions, with the Malaga footbridge works now complete.
Motorists, path users and the local community are already seeing significant improvements to their travel journeys and amenities.
The project’s supply chain involved over 250 sub-contractors delivering packages of work with a focus on local spend and supply, creating more than 3,000 jobs.
The Australian Government committed $252 million to fund the $330 million project in partnership with the WA Government.
It forms part of the Tonkin Highway Corridor, which has a total Australian Government investment of $1.34 billion.
