Australia’s local news industry receives critical boost

The recipients of the Regional and Local Newspaper Publishers Program have been announced.

Australia’s local newspaper industry is better placed to deliver sustainable news with the Australian Government announcing successful recipients under the Regional and Local Newspaper Publishers Program today.

The Regional and Local Newspaper Publishers Program will help recipients to absorb newsprint price increases.

Local news, First Nations and multicultural media are critical to regional communities across Australia, with many Australians relying on them to stay informed and connected.

A total of 208 grants will be delivered by the Government under the $15 million program.

This includes 133 grants toward eligible regional newspaper publishers, totalling $10 million, and another $5 million toward eligible independent suburban, First Nations and multicultural newspaper publishers.

The announcement forms part of a $29 million local news and community broadcasting transition package to support regional, local and community media providers.
