The Australian Government provides regular updates to the community on the development and progress of programs and services for Norfolk Island.
The Australian Government is asking the Norfolk community to have a say on proposed changes to the law dealing with Norfolk Island Regional Council elections.
To get ready for the council election, due to take place in September 2020, there needs to be a number of changes to the law to make sure it is fit for purpose.
The changes will ensure the law applying to NIRC elections is appropriate to the Island context and has a similar effect to the local government laws in NSW.
We are committed to continuing to keep the community informed and engaging with island residents. Anyone can have a say and give feedback on the proposed changes.
A discussion paper is available on the Department's website that explains the changes, at www.regional.gov.au/territories/norfolk_island/legislation-updates.aspx or in hard copy at the Office of the Administrator.
Some of the topics covered in the paper include treatment of political parties, political donations, lobbying, who may vote and qualifications for holding public office.

The department intends to publish all submissions to the discussion paper, unless a request is made for a submission to be kept confidential or a submission contains other information that is not suitable to publish.
