Consultation on Births, Deaths and Marriages law

Work is underway to improve the operation of the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages Act 1963 (NI).

The Act sets out how records of births, deaths and marriages on Norfolk Island are made and amended.

The main changes proposed are to give the Registrar discretion to determine what information is collected for most records. The information that is required for other records would be set out in the Act. It is also proposed to update the provisions relating to registration of names, and registration of a married person's change of sex.

A consultation paper which explains the proposed changes and invites the community to comment is available at www.regional.gov.au/territories/norfolk_island/currentconsultations/index.aspx

Please send your written comments by Friday 26 April 2019 to: NI_Legislation@infrastructure.gov.au or to GPO Box 594, Canberra ACT 2601.

The Department intends to publish all submissions to the consultation paper, unless a request is made for a submission to be kept confidential or a submission contains other information that is not suitable to publish.
