The Australian Government provides regular updates to the community on the development and progress of programs and services for Norfolk Island.
The Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities has been working with other agencies to progress the extension of further pieces of Commonwealth legislation to Norfolk Island. The main changes are:
- The application of the Corporations Act 2001 and Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001 will be extended to Norfolk Island to bring the regulation of companies on Norfolk Island into line with the rest of Australia. This should reduce reporting requirements and administration costs for small businesses on Norfolk Island.
- The Bankruptcy Act 1966 will be extended to Norfolk Island to ensure provisions for bankruptcy are the same as the rest of Australia.
- TheBroadcasting Services Act 1992 will be extended to allow the Australian Communications and Media Authority to issue broadcasting licences and provide more support to community-run radio and television services.
This process is likely to take a further 12 months to complete. Time will also be allowed for those affected to adjust to the changes. Before the legislation is extended, you will be provided with more detailed information about how and when the acts will apply and where you can get help to understand them.
