The Australian Government established the Cities and Suburbs Unit to deliver on its urban policy agenda. It has also committed to establishing genuine partnerships between the three levels of government, business, and the community.
National Urban Policy
The Australian Government has released the National Urban Policy. The policy speaks to the Australian Government’s aspirations for urban Australia.
The National Urban Policy was developed with input from various stakeholders including other Commonwealth agencies, state, territory and local governments, industry, urban policy experts and First Nations stakeholders.
Members of the public were invited to provide feedback on the draft policy. Public consultation was open from 23 May 2024 to 4 July 2024.

Urban Policy Forum
The Australian Government appointed urban policy experts to the Urban Policy Forum to provide advice on the Government's urban policy agenda, including supporting the development of the National Urban Policy. The Forum held its first meeting on 4 August 2023. Additional information on the Urban Policy Forum can be found in the Minister's media release.
Urban Precincts and Partnerships Program
The urban Precincts and Partnerships Program will support transformative investment in urban Australia based on the principles of unifying urban places, growing economies and serving communities.
The Government announced the regional Precincts and Partnerships Program in October 2022. Together these two programs geographically cover the nation.
Housing Support Program
The Housing Support Program will support the delivery of increased housing supply by funding projects that seek to deliver enabling infrastructure, provide amenities to support new housing development or improve building planning capability.
Thriving Suburbs Program
The Thriving Suburbs Program will provide merit based and locally-driven grants that address priority community infrastructure in urban and suburban communities.
