Improvements to life events registrations

From 1 January 2021, law changes will improve registration processes for births and deaths and make it easier for Norfolk Islanders to register a change of name.

The amendments to the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages Act 1963 (NI) update and create a simpler process for registration of changes of name and set out the requirements for the registration of a birth or death.

In March 2019, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications consulted the Norfolk Island community on the proposed amendments. No comments were received.

A fact sheet outlining the key changes is available on the department's website at /territories/norfolk_island/legislation-updates.aspx#other

Further information is available from the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages at the Norfolk Island Regional Council by phone on (+6723) 22001 (ext. 120) or email to Registrar@BDM.gov.nf or at the website, www.norfolkisland.gov.nf/services/local-services/registry/births-deaths-and-marriages
