Number: A006/2021

Date: 22 January 2021

The Cocos Emergency Management Executive Committee met this afternoon and provide the following information:

At 1pm WST the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) advised that no warnings currently exist on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
I have spoken with the Territory Controller, Sergeant David Williams and he has advised that residents can leave their homes from 2pm (Cocos time) today, 22 January 2021.

CKI can continue to expect damaging winds throughout the remainder of the day. Further heavy falls are possible from thunderstorms during today and over the weekend.

If you have any concerns regarding structural damage or electrical services to your home please advise Police immediately.

Please ensure your family, friends and neighbours are aware that an All Clear has been issued.

Residents are reminded to be cautious when going outdoors as there may be some fallen trees and loose sheeting and debris. BoM have advised that rough seas and that the swell is likely to impact the lagoon area today.

The Lagoon remains closed to all commercial and recreational vessels until further notice

  • Ferry services will resume at 0600hrs Monday 25 January 2021
  • Sydney Highway and South End Road are closed until further notice.

I would like to thank Territory Controller, Sergeant David Williams, the Shire and emergency volunteers for their efforts in keeping the Cocos community safe. Special thanks to the Cocos Emergency Management Executive, and responders and community members for their support.
