On 9 October 2020, the Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, made a Statement of Expectations in relation to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)'s telecommunications functions and powers.
The Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, has provided a Statement of Expectations to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
As Australia's independent communications competition regulator, the ACCC has a critical role in protecting broadband and mobile consumers and encouraging infrastructure investment in the telecommunications industry. The Statement recognises this role and describes the Government's priorities for the communications sector.
The ACCC has responsibility for regulating competition in the telecommunications industry under Parts XIB and XIC of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, and is accountable to the Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts in relation to its work under these parts of the Act in accordance with the Administrative Arrangements Orders.
It is common practice for Federal or State Ministers to issue a Statement of Expectations to a regulator. Statements generally address matters such as transparency, accountability and the nature of the relationship between the regulator, government and regulated entities.
