In Australia, the Commonwealth is responsible for regulating the transport of dangerous goods by air through the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and by sea through the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), while the Australian states and territories have responsibility for road and rail transport of dangerous goods.

The Department works with Commonwealth agencies, states and territories, and the National Transport Commission, to promote best practice and internationally harmonised legislation for the transport of dangerous goods in Australia. In particular, the Department provides secretariat support to the Competent Authorities Panel (CAP), and representing Australia"s interests at the UN Sub-Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. Additionally, requirements for the transport of Radioactive Substances are regulated by the states and territories in conjunction with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA).
