This study proposes a Geographic Information System (GIS) - based approach to analyse demographic, spatial and temporal variations in crash rates. The concept on which the approach is based stems from the premise that accident occurrence has to be understood as the interaction of three sets of environmental factors: the internal car environment, the external physical environment, and the dynamic traffic environment.

CR 181: Vehicle compatibility: analysis of fatal crashes

Summary

In recent years, the focus of vehicle designers and policy makers has extended from consideration of attributes of individual vehicles that increase the safety of their occupants to systemic features of the vehicle fleet that determine the safety of the vehicle occupant population as a whole. One important determinant of the absolute level of road trauma in the population is the variance in vehicle size within the vehicle fleet, ie vehicle compatibility.

Pre-ATSB (FORS) Monograph 28: Australia's International Road Safety Performance 1996

Summary

This monograph compares Australia’s road safety performance to its OECD counterparts. The comparisons are drawn taking into account the level of motorisation and population of the countries reported. The results highlight the substantial gains made in road safety both in Australia and many other countries from 1975 to 1996. CR 184: Drink Driving Rehabilitation: The Present Context (1999)

Summary

Alcohol abuse and alcohol-related problems remain a major public health issue. Drink driving is one alcohol-related problem that has gained much attention over recent years. The magnitude of the drink driving problem is often shown using crash data. Approximately one-third of all fatal road crashes, where the driver had been tested for alcohol, were associated with blood alcohol concentrations above the legal limit.
