As part of the Australian Government’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT), Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories, the Honourable Nola Marino MP, is extending the declared states of emergency (SoE) in Christmas Island (CI) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI) up until 17 September 2021.
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose a public health threat to the IOT, and while there have been no known cases of COVID-19, it is important that we continue to protect and support IOT communities, with the health and wellbeing of CI and CKI residents our first priority.
As the Australian Government commences roll-out of its COVID-19 vaccination program to the IOT later this month, it is important the community continues to follow Australian Government and local advice to keep themselves, their family, friends and community safe.
With the COVID-19 situation in mainland Australia constantly changing, I urge all residents and visitors to continue practicing COVID Safe rules and hygiene advice, and to get tested if you show any of the coronavirus symptoms including – a fever, coughing, sore throat or shortness of breath.
Australia’s COVID-19 response strategy has been very successful to date, and with the vaccination program being delivered to the territories over the coming weeks, we must remain focused on protecting ourselves, our families and our communities as we continue to work together to keep the virus out of the IOT.
I will continue to closely monitor the pandemic situation and response, ensuring we respond with swift and appropriate measures to protect the CI and CKI communities. I would like to thank Territory Controllers Detective Sergeant Kylie Lawson on CI, and Sergeant David Williams on CKI, supported by the Emergency Management Committees, for their ongoing support during these unprecedented times, along with you – the community – for your continued support and understanding as we work to keep you safe.
