Vehicle registration and driver licensing are the responsibility of state and territory governments. Each state and territory vehicle registration and driver licensing authority participates in the Austroads Registration and Licensing Task Force, as does the Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development. The Task Force promotes harmonisation and consistency for vehicle registration across Australia and facilitates collaboration between jurisdictions. It also develops and promotes national policies and procedures to harmonise driver licensing schemes and ensure the seamless transfer of driver licences across jurisdictional borders.
