Australia has contributed to the work of ICAO since it was established in 1947, and has been a Council member for over 70 years. As a member of the prestigious Part I of the ICAO Council, Australia will stand for re-election to the ICAO Council in 2019.
The ICAO Council is composed of 36 Member States elected by the Assembly for a three-year term. Part I of the Council consists of 11 States of chief importance in air transport, Part II consists of States not otherwise included but which make the largest contribution to the provision of facilities for international civil air navigation, and Part III consists of States whose inclusion ensures that all major geographic areas of the world are represented on the Council.
Australia works collaboratively with the international community, regional neighbours and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to enhance standards and guidance for safety, security, air navigation and facilitation, and environmental protection. In particular Australia works closely with our neighbours in the Pacific region where air travel is vital to the economic development and trade links of the Pacific Islands. Australia collaborates with our neighbours and aviation partners to provide capacity building assistance on transport safety, air navigation and security issues to 18 States in our region. In recent years Australia has provided over AUD $9.31 billion in aid projects to the Pacific region with $1.29 billion spent on transport related projects.
We actively participate in and make a significant technical and leadership contribution to more than 55 ICAO technical committees, panels and study groups.
In line with ICAO priorities, Australia sets best practice by:
- leading the world in the implementation of Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast to provide greater efficiency across our flight region.
- world leading Civil-Military cooperation through the OneSky program which enhances the efficiency of shared civil and defence airspace to achieve improved outcomes for both industries.
- providing strong support to the development of the historic climate agreement, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
