The expert team from Senversa and the Departments of Health and Infrastructure will be undertaking virtual community engagement from 14 February – 4 March 2022 to update the Norfolk Island community on the final outcomes of the detailed environmental investigation into per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) levels related to the historical use of firefighting foam at the Norfolk Island International Airport.
The expert team will present the results of the investigation and the risk assessments as well as outlining the next steps in the PFAS Management Plan to manage potential risks arising from PFAS contamination associated with the Airport and surrounding areas.
The virtual community engagement event will be conducted through an interactive, internet Microsite. Through the site, community members can read a simple summary of the investigation, access investigation fact sheets and reports and ask questions confidentially and receive direct answers through phone, email or regular post. Additionally, interested community members will be able to book a one-on-one teleconference with the expert team, if they wish.
The engagement key details are:
- 14 February – 4 March 2022 Microsite live with the ability to ask questions
- 21-25 February 2022 – one-one-one teleconferences with the expert team
- These can be booked through the website or by contacting staff through the email address or phone number below
- 7 March 2022 – all information, such as reports, summaries and fact sheets will be available on the Departmental website.
For anyone who does not have access to a computer to undertake a one-on-one briefing with the expert team, the Department will provide a COVID-safe facility at the Department on-island offices at New Military Barracks, Kingston.
If you have questions or would like further information, we encourage you to attend the community Microsite information sessions or contact NIPFAS@infrastructure.gov.au or the Department on 23315. For further information on PFAS, please go to www.pfas.gov.au.
