This study was commissioned to provide a description of rural traffic crashes in Queensland using available mass data and to investigate regional effects on these crashes. The sample comprised 1078 fatal and hospital admission crashes occurring in rural areas during 1984. In general, results were consistent with findings from other States and particularly highlighted the significant proportion of single vehicle crashes, the severity of impacts with roadside objects and control difficulties experienced when vehicles ran on road shoulders.
