  • These circulars provide guidance and information on the administrative arrangements covering the policy and procedures supporting the vehicle certification process.

  • Vehicle standards bulletin 1, version 5 has been released.

  • On 10 February 2014 the Heavy Vehicle National Law, covering all heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes, commenced in Queensland, NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, SA and the ACT.

  • Third Edition ADRs are national vehicle safety standards, the majority of which came in to effect from 1 July 1988. They have been administered by the Australian Government since 1 August 1989 for new vehicles. In general, vehicles had to comply with the ADRs in force when they were first manufactured.

  • Second Edition ADRs are vehicle safety standards which selectively came in to effect from 1 January 1969 for new vehicles. They were administered by the state and territory governments until 1 August 1989 for new vehicles. From the time of 1 July 1988 onwards, the Second Edition ADRs have been increasingly superseded by the Third Edition ADRs and this was completed in July 1992. In general, vehicles had to comply with the ADRs in force when they were first manufactured.

  • The Australian Design Rules (ADRs) set out design standards for vehicle safety and emissions. They are developed through a consultative process involving government, industry, employee and consumer representatives.

  • The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development has commenced a public consultation process on the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 (MVSA) to consider its currency and whether it remains effective and efficient.
