Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989—Compliance and Enforcement

Under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 (the Act), the department regulates the safety, environmental and anti-theft performance of all new and used vehicles entering the Australian market for the first time to deliver the regulatory outcome of improved vehicle safety that delivers economic benefits.

The department monitors and enforces compliance with the Act by encouraging voluntary compliance, undertaking informed risk-based compliance activities and applying proportionate enforcement responses when non-compliance is detected.
