The Productivity Commission Inquiry Report on Tasmanian Shipping and Freight

On 29 November 2013 the Australian Government released the Terms of Reference for a Productivity Commission inquiry into Tasmania's shipping costs and competitiveness of Tasmania's freight industry. The Productivity Commission, in consultation with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, has conducted a review of:

  • Tasmania's shipping costs;
  • the competitiveness of Tasmania's freight industry structure and economic infrastructure; and
  • the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme and the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme so that any inefficiencies, inequities and anomalies of the schemes can be addressed.

On 7 March 2014 the Productivity Commission provided its Inquiry Report on Tasmanian Shipping and Freight to the Australian Government. On 24 June 2014, the Productivity Commission Report was tabled in Parliament.

More information on the inquiry is available from the Productivity Commission website.
