Inquiry into Aviation and Maritime Transport Security Education and Training in Australia

On 11 December 2013, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, the Honourable Warren Truss MP, formally directed the Inspector of Transport Security to conduct an Inquiry into Aviation and Maritime Transport Security Education and Training in Australia.

The Inquiry has conducted over 150 meetings in capital city and regional airports and seaports across Australia and with relevant government agencies, industry representatives and peak bodies, training organisations and education professionals. It has also consulted with international peak bodies, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and International Maritime Organization (IMO), and national government agencies and industry representatives in Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States and Canada.

The Inquiry has also employed expert input from technical and industry professionals and received 15 submissions from industry peak bodies, professional associations, companies, government agencies and individuals addressing issues of concern.

In late 2015, Mr Hughes was succeeded by Mr Michael Carmody AO as Inspector of Transport Security. Mr Carmody will finalise the Inquiry Report in mid-2016.
