Aviation incident categories

The list of incident categories below should be used as a guide only. This list is not exhaustive—there may be other incidents not detailed below that should be reported.

These categories and sub-categories are used by the Department for reporting and analysis of security-related incidents.

Aircraft

Incident types relate specifically to incidents that impact directly on an aircraft or its operations.

The focus of these events is the aircraft.

  • False travel documentation—attempt to board aircraft
  • Hijack alert
  • Laser light
  • Sabotage—aircraft
  • Tampering with aircraft
  • Unattended or unsecured aircraft
  • Unauthorised access—aircraft

Breach/ intrusion

Incident types relate specifically to incidents where there has been a violation of an airport's secure environment (sterile area, landside security zone, and security restricted area and airside security zone).

The focus of these events is the secure environment of an airport.

  • Forced door
  • Perimeter breach
  • Perimeter damage
  • Sterile area breach
  • Unauthorised access—ASZ/SRA
  • Unsecured doors/gates

Criminal

Incident types relate specifically to acts of a criminal nature. Criminal nature has the potential to highlight vulnerabilities in the security regime.

  • Assault
  • Criminal activity
  • Sabotage—airport

Public behaviour

Incident types relate specifically to incidents regarding the behaviour of the travelling public.

The focus of these events is unusual behaviour by the public.

  • Disruptive person on aircraft
  • Disruptive person at airport
  • Inappropriate comment Suspicious person

Screening events

Incident types relate specifically to incidents involving screening procedures and processes.

The focus of these events is effectiveness of the screening processes undertaken at an airport.

  • Liquids, aerosols and gels
  • Prohibited item detected at screening point
  • Prohibited item in a sterile area
  • Prohibited item on board an aircraft
  • Other prohibited item
  • Positive ETD
  • Screening refusal

Staff/ procedural

Incident types relate specifically to incidents involving failure of security procedures.

The focus of these events is corruption of security procedures by an internal source.

  • ASIC incident
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Failure of staff procedure/ Protocol
  • Loss of keys/ access cards
  • Security system failure

Suspicious items

Incident types relate specifically to items that are of a suspicious nature (unusual, unaccountable and questionable).

The focus of these events is unusual items in the security environment.

  • Chemical/biological/radiological
  • Suspicious item on-board aircraft
  • Suspicious item in terminal
  • Suspicious vehicle

Threats

Incident types have been relate specifically to incidents where there has been an intention or declaration made to undertake some course of action (menace) against an aircraft or airport.
