Do my staff require access to security-sensitive areas?

Security-sensitive areas are discrete zones established to protect critical or vulnerable aspects of Australian aviation and maritime infrastructure. These areas are subject to stringent security measures including significant access restrictions.

A person may need an ASIC, if they are required to have regular unescorted access to secure areas of an airport. A person may need an MSIC, if they are required to have unmonitored access to a maritime security zone at least once year.

If a person is visiting the secure area of a security controlled airport, they will need a visitor identification card (VIC) and must be supervised by a holder of a valid ASIC while in the area.

Do my staff require a white ASIC or MSIC?

If you operate any of the following businesses, you may have employees or contractors that need a white ASIC:

What are the obligations for ASIC and MSIC holders?

Holders of ASICs or MSICs must:

  1. Return the card on expiry, suspension or cancellation (Note: this obligation does not apply to white ASIC or white MSIC holders);
  2. Properly display the card in the security areas or zones (Note: this obligation does not apply to white ASIC or white MSIC holders);
  3. Report security-relevant offences to their issuing body or the Secretary of the Attorney General's Department (contact AusCheck for details);
  4. Notify their issuing body of lost, stolen, altered and defaced cards; and
  5. Notify their issuing body of changes in circumstances (example: change in operational need or change of name).
